The Los Angeles Superior Court building is one of the large projects he has worked on. He conducted the financial analysis and created the plan of action, including timelines and budgets, for the retrofitting of the twenty-floor building. It is his belief that rather than demolishing old structures, it makes more sense financially and environmentally to retrofit them. More than that, he also uses thermal photography to analyze the building’s envelope. By running tests and checking where the building is losing heating or cooling, he makes decisions on window replacements. He works with competing vendors to get the best prices on building and installing top of the line energy efficient windows to save money and energy resources. He also handles the negotiations on renewal contracts and works with commercial brokers when he has vacant offices for lease. Environmental ChallengesAt ECO Corp, Richard Blech manages the retrofits that include installing energy efficient solar windows and new lights as well as the chiller plant and the water purification system, called the SolarRain System. Honey Bees as a Natural ResourceMore than just a hobby, Richard Blech looks to honey bees as a natural resource for food that can also be used as a preservative, antiseptic and food additive. The amino acids, vitamins and nutrients found in honey cannot be created in any laboratory, but only by honeybees. In his spare time, he studies the bees to find more uses for their natural resources.
